A consortium comprising Orascom Construction and Mitsubishi has secured an $800m contract to perform works for the first phase of Cairo Metro’s Line 4.

The contract, awarded by the Egyptian Government’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), involves the delivery of the Railway Systems, Track and Depot Works Package (CP411).

The scope of works includes the delivery of track work, signalling, power supply and telecommunication systems.

The consortium will also be responsible for building depots/workshop, as well as supplying the metro line with automatic fare collection systems and platform screen doors.

As agreed, Mitsubishi will deliver equipment for building the railway systems and will handle the associated administrative work. On the other hand, Orascom will deliver the project’s civil engineering work, build the train operation control centre and other facilities.

The first phase of the underground Cairo Metro Line 4 will run from central Cairo to the Giza Pyramid Complex in the south-western part of Greater Cairo.

The 19km stretch will feature 16 stations.

The project is funded by an international loan by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
