US-based Trimble and Railhead have joined forces to integrate real-time remote monitoring, diagnostics and on-board video to increase locomotive asset usage and productivity for railway operators.

The collaboration is expected to improve tracking, safety and operations.

Railhead will also offer the Trimble R2M remote diagnostic system as part of its US portfolio.

Railhead president Joe Donnan said: "We are very excited to partner with Trimble.

"The addition of the Trimble R2M solution to the Railhead portfolio gives us the ability to leverage Trimble's years of experience in Europe together with our advanced LDVR capability and advanced interface modules to provide US rail operators with a competitive and proven asset management solution."

The Trimble R2M system was initially launched in Europe ten years ago and is currently used by rail operators such as South West Trains and Greater Anglia in the UK, Irish Rail, VR Finland and others.

"Multiple data feeds will be processed by the system from on-train event recording equipment to deliver fault alerts as they occur."

Multiple data feeds will be processed by the system from on-train event recording equipment to deliver fault alerts as they occur. This would help to control rooms and workshops to prepare condition-based maintenance, as well as train operations management.

The rugged high-definition locomotive digital video recorders (LDVR) hardware of Railhead is approved by Association of American Railways (AAR). Video provided by this system can be used for documentation purposes for compliance and litigation.

Trimble and Railhead will integrate video data streams from Railhead's LDVR along with system data feeds from multiple on-train devices using the Trimble R2M system.

By getting a complete picture of rail asset status, the mechanical department, emergency personnel, engineers and operators will be able to improve maintenance and operations.
