MTA

The MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) in the US has started a $395.7m project to renovate nine stations along the Sea Beach N Subway Line from 8th Ave in Sunset Park to 86th St in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.

The stations involved in this renovation include 8th Ave, Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Ave, 18th Ave, 20th Ave, Bay Pkwy, Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86 St.

The project will provide improved platforms and overpasses, new stairways and handrails, repairs to canopies and columns, renovations of historic head house entrances and fare control areas, as well as enhanced safety features and communication systems.

"We appreciate our customers’ patience while we complete this important project."

According to NYCT, the renovations will create better travel conditions for customers and will also take place between stations with repairs to retaining walls along the right of way.

Funded under MTA’s 2010-2014 capital programme, the contract for the nine N Subway stations pre-dates New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s recently announced plan for rapid design and renewal of 30 additional subway stations.

The MTA noted that it will work with contractors John P Picone and Skanska USA to push for greater efficiency in the renovation process.

Scope of work will also include addition of modern amenities such as new lighting and station artwork, as well as help point intercoms to get in touch with the MTA’s rail control centre for information or in the case of emergencies.

NYCT department of subways acting senior vice-president Wynton Habersham said: "We appreciate our customers’ patience while we complete this important project, and regret the inconvenience this work may cause.

"In order to ensure that our customers are well-informed of these station closures and alternative travel options, notices will be posted in stations and on trains, and announcements will be made on all N Subway trains."

As part of the upgrade, two stations will receive accessibility improvements and will see two Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramps added to the 8th Ave station, while four elevators will be installed at the New Utrecht Avenue station.

The work will be carried out in two phases, with the Manhattan-bound platforms at all nine stations will be the first to close for rehabilitation starting today and continuing for 14 months.

Following completion of this renewal work, the work on the Coney Island-bound side of tracks will be initiated.

John P Picone will rehabilitate the six stations between 8 Ave and Bay Pkwy, while Skanska will oversee the work at Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86 St.

According to NYCT, the entire project is expected to be completed in about four years.

Preliminary preparation work started last April year on various elements of the project, including renovation work on subway, construction of temporary platforms at two stations, pruning trees from along the tracks and renovation of unstaffed control areas.
