The UK’s Network Rail (NR) will replace the roof and rebuild all eight platforms at Carlisle station in Cumbria.

Carried out as part of NR’s Railway Upgrade Plan, the £14.7m upgrade would extend the life of the roof, which dates back to 1847, and reduce future maintenance.

There have been instances in the past where the platforms had to be closed due to falling glass from the roof.

"The station’s environment will be much more pleasant for passengers and provide them with a better start or end to their journeys."

The first phase of the project will see a £9.5m replacement of the roof, while the remaining £5.2m will be spent on the second phase involving improvements to the platforms.

The new roof will use the same material, ethene-co-tetrafluoroethene (ETFE), used at Manchester Victoria and Birmingham New Street stations.

Network Rail area director Terry Strickland said: "Carlisle station is impressive and historic but its large roof is showing its age and is in need of significant repair.

"Together with the improved platforms, the station’s environment will be much more pleasant for passengers and provide them with a better start or end to their journeys."

Carlisle station has listed building status, and NR is working closely with Historic England and Carlisle City Council to protect it.

Station operator Virgins Trains said no train services will be affected and all areas of work will take place in safely hoarded areas.

The roof refurbishment work will start on 30 November and will take up to 15 months to complete.

Work on the platforms is scheduled to start once the roof is finished and is expected to be completed in February 2018.
