Japanese firm Mitsubishi Electric has secured a contract from Spanish train builder Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) to deliver high-tech traction equipment for a fleet of 118 new-generation Sprinter (SNG) EMUs for Dutch Railways (NS).
The project, in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric Europe’s Italian branch, was considered to be one of the biggest train supply orders in Europe in 2014.
CAF said the traction equipment supply contract was awarded to Mitsubishi based on its proven technology, which has been successful both in the Japanese domestic and international markets.
Delivery of the traction system is expected to start from 2016, while the delivery and commercial operation of the trains is scheduled to begin in 2018.
The new NS trains will replace Type SGMm two-car and three-car Sprinter EMUs and the last remaining sets of Type Mat ’64.
As part of the deal, Mitsubishi will supply traction inverters and other systems related to traction, while high-efficiency, regenerative braking performance and downsized equipment will contribute to energy saving.
