The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) of the US has awarded a deal to Kapsch TrafficCom to design, develop, implement and maintain a turnkey regional mobile ticketing system (MTS).

The new MTS will allow MARTA passengers to purchase, pay and electronically validate their tickets through a mobile application, as well as directly through the mobile ticketing website.

Kapsch TrafficCom has planned to deliver the roughly $11m project in collaboration with its sister companies, including Kapsch TrafficCom, Kapsch CarrierCom and Kapsch Public TransportCom.

MARTA CIO Hsi Ming said: “MARTA is proud to be one of the first public transit agencies to implement Mobile Ticketing, and we are happy to offer this mobility option for our riders. MARTA is excited to roll out this project together with Kapsch.”

The installation of MTS will simplify the whole ticketing process of buying and validating fares. Customers will be able to purchase tickets at their convenience, eliminating the need to visit a kiosk.

The system will also enable passengers to validate fare purchases via electronic validation systems at unmanned rail or bus stations.

Kapsch demonstrated a complete testing of the full system in a real-world environment to prove the viability of the solution prior to securing the contract.

The new arrangement will see Kapsch collaborate with Bytemark and TransTrack Systems to deliver a mobile ticketing application and website.

"MARTA is proud to be one of the first public transit agencies to implement Mobile Ticketing, and we are happy to offer this mobility option for our riders."

The partner companies will also provide a customer service tool for account management, electronic validators and a back-office solution to MARTA for operating and managing the MTS under the deal.

Additionally, the contract includes the provision of customised dashboards and reporting, along with various maintenance and support services.

The MTS will provide mobile ticketing services for all of MARTA’s 38 rail stations, 565 fixed route buses and 210 paratransit buses.

MARTA is one of the largest rapid transit systems in the US and provides transportation services to more than 500,000 customers every week day.
