The European Commission has granted €293m in financial support for five projects aimed to enhance sustainable transport services in Warsaw, Lódz, Szczecin and Poznan, Poland.
Granted from the commission’s cohesion fund, this investment will support the modernisation of transport systems in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

These projects are financed under the Polish ‘Infrastructure and Environment’ operational programme under the same priority, namely ‘environment-friendly transport’. It is expected to be finalised by the end of this year.
Regional policy commissioner Corina Cretu said: "I welcome the adoption of these projects, which contributes to improving the mobility of the Polish citizens, ensuring safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly travel conditions."
The first project will see the purchase of 85 low-floor trams for the public transport in Warsaw. This €141m project, in which EU will finance €91.7m, is expected to serve 1.8 million more people with the upgraded urban transport system in 2016.
The European Union will also provide €41m for a €51.3m project aimed to purchase 20 new double-deck intermediate coaches, two new control coaches and two new locomotives for operations on the railway lines in the Warsaw metropolitan area.

By GlobalDataA €110.8m project will involve construction and upgrade of tram lines and tram stops along with the construction of a hub for tram, train and car at the Lódz Fabryczna railway station with a Park & Ride car parking systems. The EU will provide €85.8m fund for this project.
The fourth project, with a €52.2m investment, will upgrade sections of the tram track in Western districts of Szczecin and the refurbishment of the Pogodno depot in order to adapt it to the requirements of low-floor rolling stock.
The next project will see the modernisation of 5.31km of the tram and trolleybus network along Grunwaldzka Street and along lines linking the stadium to the city centre, to the railway station and to the airport.
The last two projects will receive a grant of €41.7m and €33.2m respectively.
