India’s Delhi Metro has started trial runs on the ITO – Kashmere Gate section of violet line.
The 5.17km-long stretch will serve as an extension of the existing, operational Escorts Mujesar (Faridabad) – ITO corridor.
The section is completely underground and will consist of Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Lal Quila and Kashmere Gate stations.
The Kashmere Gate station will provide interconnectivity between three network corridors.
During the trial runs, the Metro train interaction will be checked with physical infringements in a bid to make sure that there is no physical blockage during the train movement on the track.
Testing will also be carried out on the entire signalling system.

At the time of testing, the behaviour of the track system, as well as the over head electrification (OHE) will be checked repeatedly.
After the commissioning of this section, also known as the heritage line, it will enable residents of Faridabad and various south Delhi areas such as Govindpuri, Kalkaji, Nehru Place, East of Kailash to travel directly to Old Delhi.
Commuters on the yellow line between Central Secretariat and Kashmere Gate can also use the violet line to reach the same destinations.
The entire 9.37km long Central Secretariat – Kashmere Gate section will be operational after the commissioning of this section.
Central Secretariat will become a part of the 43.40km-long Escorts Mujesar – Kashmere Gate violet line corridor, which is also being extended to Ballabhgarh from Escorts Mujesar at present.
