The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has officially started construction on the new Thomson Line, marking a major step forwards towards doubling the country’s rail network by 2030.
On completion, the new 30km-long Thomson Line will connect the northern part of Singapore to the central business district (CBD) and Marina Bay area, as well as increase capacity to the north-south corridor.
Expected to open in three phases from 2019, the new underground rail line will comprise 22 stations by 2021 and is expected to see a daily ridership of approximately 400,000 commuters, as well as deliver significant time savings to passengers when it becomes fully operational.
A total of roughly SGD1.4bn ($1.09bn) worth of contracts has already been awarded to local companies and joint ventures.
By the end of this year, LTA will award another three contracts for civil works at Orchard, Marina South and Gardens by the Bay stations.
