Rolling stock manufacturer Bombardier Transportation and its Malaysian partner Hartasuma have delivered 14 new, driverless Innovia Metro 300 trains to state-owned company Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.

The new vehicles are scheduled to operate on the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit Line in Kuala Lumpur and were delivered to the Malaysian company as part of a contract originally signed in 2012.

Bombardier Transportation South East Asia head Jayaram Naidu said: “Bombardier has been present in and delivering sustainable rail transit solutions to our well-established ecosystem in Malaysia for 25 years, reflecting the strength of our technology and expertise.

“We are very proud that our latest, additional Innovia trains are contributing to increasing urban connectivity across the greater Kuala Lumpur area, estimated to grow to ten million residents by 2020.

“This is also a further milestone in this important market for Bombardier, in which 374 cars have been ordered, making it one of the largest INNOVIA fleets in the in the world.”

"We are very proud that our latest, additional Innovia trains are contributing to increasing urban connectivity across the greater Kuala Lumpur area."

The company carried out the final assembly and interior designing of the four-car vehicles at its Hartasuma Consortium facility in Westport.

Metro 300 trains are capable of transporting up to 30,000 passengers every hour in each direction.

The addition of the new fleet is expected to substantially increase ridership along the Kelena Jaya Line, as well as support Malaysia’s aim to ensure 40% of all commutes across the Klang Valley are made using public transportation by 2030.

Bombardier is currently working to provide an additional fleet of 27 four-car Innovia Metro 300 trains to Prasarana by 2022, in addition to carrying out a major renovation programme on the Kelana Jaya Line's original vehicle fleet.
