UK train operator Abellio Greater Anglia has started testing the new MultiPass system on services between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street.
This virtual travel pass system is being piloted by selected Abellio customers on this route using the MultiPass mobile app, Cambridge News reported.
This is part of Abellio’s efforts to introduce the new pass system to eliminate the need for paper tickets and ticket machines.
MultiPass co-founder and CEO Alexander Peschkoff was quoted by the news agency as saying: "Customers piloting MultiPass get to be the first to experience the future, passing freely through stations without the need for paper tickets."
The MultiPass mobile app helps commuters to record their journeys made on the MultiPass-enabled network. It will offer the summery of journeys and corresponding payments made using MultiPass app.
According to MultiPass, the new pass system aims to solve challenges such as the difficulty of navigating the UK’s vast array of ticketing options to get the best fares, and the need to have physical tickets.
This new solution will also help operators through reducing costs, increasing revenues, improving capacity utilisation and enhancing customer experience.
In 2013, the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board, awarded a special £1.1m grant to the industry consortium to pilot MultiPass.
The MultiPass consortium consisting of GuestLogix, GIS, Global Travel Ventures, Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London and transport operators, including Abellio Greater Anglia.
