US transport operator Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has awarded a $102.7m contract to Barletta Heavy Division to refurbish the Wellington Rail Yard and upgrade the Orange Line Signal System.
The contract was awarded following the approval of MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board (FMCB) and a competitive bidding process where Barletta submitted the lowest bid.
MBTA general manager Luis Manuel Ramírez said: “At a total capital investment of $1.98bn, we are not only purchasing a new fleet of Orange and Red Line vehicles, but our Red and Orange Line Infrastructure Improvements Program also covers infrastructure upgrades to track, power, signals and facilities like Wellington Yard.
“Although customers might not feel the immediate impact of these upgrades, they are just as necessary to providing a more reliable, dependable service that our customers deserve.”
Under the terms of the contract, Barletta will be responsible to replace critical elements throughout Wellington Yard that will enable reliable operations and proper maintenance for the new vehicle fleet.
The project is expected to be completed in 36 months and support the arrival of 152 new Orange Line cars.

By GlobalDataLast month, MBTA launched ‘TrainLoc’ and ‘Concentrate’ programmes to identify the locations of Commuter Rails and predict their accurate arrivals.
TrainLoc streamlines the process that transmits Commuter Rail train locations and their expected arrival time.
Concentrate allows high-capacity sharing of all MBTA real-time transit data with third-party entities and consumers, before aggregating all real-time information to consolidate into two single-source outputs.
