The Government of Maharashtra in India has approved two Mumbai metro projects to bolster a faster transit network in the city.

The Mumbai metro projects have a combined length of 13.58km and are expected to cost around Rs66.07bn ($917m).

In a meeting, the state cabinet has approved the expansion of Metro-9 stretching from Dahisar to Meera Bhayandar, as well as Metro-7A connecting Andheri to the city’s international airport.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) will be the nodal agency to implement and raise funds for the two projects.

A state official told newindianexpress.com that the Metro-9 will involve construction of a 10.41km elevated corridor and feature 11 stations.

The Andheri-airport link will be 3.17km long, with 2.11km built underground.

The construction of Dahisar-Meera-Bhayandar metro line is expected to be complete by 2022.

Alongside receiving state and central government support, MMRDA will also raise loans from national and international organisations to build the projects.

All people those affected by construction of these two projects will be compensated by the government, dnaindia.com reported quoting a project note.

Currently, Mumbai has one operational metro line and four other lines in construction stage.

Recently, Mumbai Metro Rail (MMRCL) awarded a €315m contract to Alstom for the supply of 248 metro cars for Metro Line 3.

Line 3 will link Cuffe Parade business district in the south with Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone.
