HS2 has shortlisted bidders for tunnel and lineside Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) systems and track systems.

The winning entities will provide high-speed track of nearly 280km and other related infrastructure.

Both the contracts are inclusive of design and construction works between London, Crewe and Birmingham, where HS2 locomotives will join the current West Coast Mainline.

Contracts for tunnel and lineside M&E and track systems are expected to be awarded in 2022.

The winners of track system contracts will also be responsible for the management and coordination of the multifaceted interfaces between the track and other components of the rail systems.

The entities that will be invited to tender for track systems under Lot 1 of the Phase One (Urban-London and Birmingham), which is worth £434m, are Balfour Beatty Group, ETF SAS, TSO SAS (BBVT JV), Ferrovial Construction (UK) and BAM Nuttall (Ferrovial-BAM Joint Venture), Colas Rail, and STRABAG AG UK and Rhomberg Sersa UK (STRABAG Rhomberg Sersa JV).

Under Lot 2 for Phase One (Open Route – Central), which is worth £526m, firms to be invited to tender for track systems are Balfour Beatty Group, ETF SAS, TSO SAS (BBVT JV), Ferrovial Construction (UK) and BAM Nuttall (Ferrovial-BAM JV), Colas Rail, and STRABAG AG UK and Rhomberg Sersa UK (STRABAG Rhomberg Sersa JV).

Under Lot 3,  for Phase One (Open Route – North), valued at £566m, entities to be invited for tender are Balfour Beatty Group, ETF SAS, TSO SAS (BBVT Joint Venture), Ferrovial Construction (UK), and BAM Nuttall (Ferrovial-BAM Joint Venture), and Colas Rail.

Similarly, under Lot 4, for Phase 2a (Track), worth £431m, Balfour Beatty Group, ETF SAS, TSO SAS (BBVT JV), Ferrovial Construction (UK) and BAM Nuttall (Ferrovial-BAM JV), Colas Rail, and STRABAG AG UK and Rhomberg Sersa UK (STRABAG Rhomberg Sersa JV) will be called to tender for track systems.

The winner of £498m Tunnel and Lineside M&E contract will be responsible for the designing, manufacturing, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of the Phase One and Phase 2a Tunnel and Lineside M&E systems until the handover.

The contract also comprises tunnel services within the shafts, distribution in the open route, tunnels, cross-passages and low voltage power services.

In addition, the contractor will also design, supply, install, test and commission the tunnel ventilation systems.

The organisations that will be invited to tender for tunnel and lineside M&E package are Alstom Transport UK, Balfour Beatty Bailey Joint Venture (BBB JV), a joint venture between Balfour Beatty Group Ltd and NG Bailey, and Costain Group.

“The appointment of the Track Systems and M&E suppliers will be an important milestone for the project, and a significant opportunity for the industry and the wider supply chain. At the peak of construction, HS2 will support around 30,000 jobs and contracts like this will provide a real boost for employers across the supply chain, helping to boost skills and provide opportunities for years to come.”
