Chinese civil engineering company Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (STEC) has secured a contract from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) for the construction of a 5.6km underground section of the upcoming Delhi-Meerut RRTS project in India.

The section will span from New Ashok Nagar to Sahibabad.

NCRTC is building the country’s first regional rapid rail transit system (RRTS).

An NCRTC spokesperson said: “Approvals have to be taken at various levels for bids that are funded by multilateral agencies. This bid was also awarded following the set procedure and guidelines.

“Now, all the civil work tenders of the 82km-long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor have been awarded and the construction is going on in full swing to commission the project in time.”

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing funds for the 82km-long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor while the procurement is being administrated by guidelines set by the bank and government.

According to ADB’s procurement guidelines, vendors from all member nations of the bank are qualified to take part in the bidding process without any partiality.

On 9 November 2019, bids for the construction of the tunnel from New Ashok Nagar to Sahibabad of the Delhi Ghaziabad Meerut RRTS corridor were invited by NCRTC.

All five firms that submitted the technical bids were selected after the technical bid evaluation.

After receiving the NOC on Technical Bid Evaluation from ADB, the financial bids were opened.

Later, after qualifying on all the parameters, STEC emerged as the L1 bidder for the tender.

The Indian Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had revealed the first look of the RRTS train in September last year.

The lightweight RRTS train can achieve a maximum speed of 180km/h on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor and will be fully air-conditioned.

This new train will reduce the commuting time from Delhi to Meerut to less than an hour.

After considerable trials, the prototype, which is scheduled to roll off the production line next year, will be put into public use.

The 17km priority corridor of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS from Sahibabad to Duhai in Ghaziabad will be operational in 2023 while the entire corridor will begin operations in 2025.
