Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced the new £14.8bn Crossrail railway in the UK will be named the Elizabeth line in honour of the Queen.

Australia’s Victoria Government shortlisted three bidders to deliver the first stage of works included in the A$11bn ($7.6bn) Melbourne Metro Rail Project early works package tender.
Shortlisted bidders include CPB Contractors and John Holland KBR JV, which comprises John Holland Group and KBR, and Lend Lease Coleman Rail JV, which includes Lend Lease Engineering and Coleman Rail.

Rolls-Royce to deliver 100 MTU engines for Argentina’s Chinese-built freight locomotives
Chinese locomotive manufacturer China Railway Rolling Stock (CRRC) awarded a contract to Rolls-Royce worth more than €30m to deliver a total of 100 MTU series 4000 engines.
CRRC will equip the 16V 4000 R43 type engines in 100 freight locomotives, which are being built under a contract with main contractor China Machinery Engineering (CMEC).
Following completion, the locomotives will be exported to Argentina for service with Belgrano Cargas y Logisticas of the Argentinian Ministry of Interior and Transport.
CHSRA unveils revised plan for $64.2bn high-speed railway line
The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) in the US unveiled a revised business plan for the high-speed railway line being built in the state.
Under the new plan, overall capital costs of the project are reduced by $3.4bn, from the original $67.6bn to $64.2bn.
It also provides the path forward for the construction and operation of a section of the high-speed rail programme using existing funds, which will generate revenue within the next ten years.
Alstom unveils new Citadis X05 tram design for Nice East-West line in France
Alstom unveiled the design of Citadis trams that will be operated on the East-West line and Line 3 of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropole in France.
The company collaborated with French designer ORA ÏTO to personalise the Citadis X05 range for the city of Nice.
Between November and January, the inhabitants voted to select a design out of three propositions created and presented by the designer.
New York mayor unveils $2.5bn Brooklyn to Queens light rail system plan
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a plan to build a new light rail system that links waterfront neighbourhoods in Brooklyn and Queens in the US.
The proposed $2.5bn Brooklyn Queens Connector (BQX) project is expected to be one of the largest urban streetcar systems in the US.
The light rail system will run along a 16-mile corridor through Astoria, Ravenswood, Long Island City, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Navy Yard, DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Gowanus and Sunset Park.
Siemens to deliver 25 six-carriage units to the UK’s Govia Thameslink Railway
UK train operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) signed a £200m contract with Siemens with the aim of replacing its suburban train fleet on the Great Northern route.
Under the deal, Siemens will deliver 25 climate-controlled six-carriage units to be built at its Krefeld plant in Germany.
Running between Moorgate in the City of London and Welwyn, Hertford, Stevenage and Letchworth, the new vehicles are scheduled to enter service by the end of 2018.
Indra to equip Argentina’s Buenos Aires rail network with ticketing technology
Argentina’s national rail operator awarded a contract to Indra to provide access control and ticketing technology across the Buenos Aires metropolitan area (BAMA) rail network.
Valued at €35m, the contract will see the company equip eight lines with 1,400 ticket gates and 170 disabled entrances at 200 stations.
The company will also supply 200 top-up machines for contactless SUBE cards, 150 onboard validators, 230 platform validators, 160 station in-station transaction hubs and 300 journey inspection terminals.
