Expected to create up to 800 direct jobs, the scope of works will include the upgrade of roads and power supplies, substation developments, utility relocations and ground improvements.

The works will also site preparation across Melbourne’s south-east to accommodate tunnel boring machines.

Minister for Suburban Rail Loop Jacinta Allan said: “This is the biggest transport project in Victorian history and it will transform our state forever – we know that the best construction companies want to be a part of delivering it.

“We said we’d get on and deliver Stage One of Suburban Rail Loop and we’re not wasting a second – this early phase of construction is going to create hundreds of local jobs and make this huge project a reality.”

The move comes nearly a month after the Victorian government committed A$2.2bn ($1.61bn) for early works on stage one of the Suburban Rail Loop project.

Once complete, the project will connect every major rail service from the Frankston line to the Werribee line.

Separately, Victoria has completed the construction of the new Avon River rail bridge in Stratford. The new bridge will improve services along the Gippsland line.
