Siemens Mobility has received a contract from Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) in California, US, to provide 20 new light rail vehicles (LRVs).

The $100m contract includes 20 trains, spare parts and tools.

This is the first order placed by Sacramento after the late 1980s when 36 U2A vehicles were ordered by SacRT from Siemens Mobility.

The S700 LRVs will offer low-level boarding at all doorways, spacious seating design and bigger windows for improved light and views.

The LRVs will also feature better accessibility with wider aisles, built-in storage space to accommodate luggage, as well as areas for bicycles.

Siemens Mobility states that the LRVs will provide improved performance and optimised availability due to the condition monitoring, remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance.

SacRT General Manager and CEO Henry Li said: “This purchase is a major victory for SacRT and the Sacramento region.

“We are committed to providing innovative mobility solutions in our region and these new 20 low-floor light rail vehicles are another step forward.”

Siemens Mobility CEO Sabrina Soussan added: “We are pleased to help dynamic cities like Sacramento meet their mobility needs.

“Siemens Mobility is committed to delivering trains that enhance the passenger experience, increase value sustainably over their lifecycle and improve availability.

“In addition, these new trains will have a strong link to the area they serve, since they will be manufactured locally right at our Sacramento plant.”

The LRVs will be manufactured at Siemens Mobility Sacramento plant.

Last month, Siemens Mobility received a contract from Germany’s Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW) to supply 20 two-car Mireo Plus B trainsets.
