A joint venture (JV) comprising Bombardier Transportation and Downer EDI has delivered the final B-Series electric multiple unit train for Western Australia’s Public Transport Authority (PTA) at the Nowergup Rail Depot.
The JV, known as EDI Rail Bombardier Transportation, was contracted in 2016 to deliver 30 electric multiple units to PTA.

Bombardier Transportation South East Asia and Australia region president Wendy McMillan said: “We are very proud to complete the delivery of the B-Series EMU train fleet to the full satisfaction of PTA and providing a comfortable and reliable transport solution for over 60 million commuters every year.”
The EDI Rail Bombardier Transportation started working on Perth’s B-series train sets 15 years ago. The scope of the works included design, assembly and maintenance of the vehicles.
The initial order comprised 31 three-car trainsets, the first of which entered service in 2004.
Following the delivery of the last vehicle, PTA now operates a fleet of 78 EMU trains.

By GlobalDataAll the trains were manufactured at Downer’s Maryborough facility in Queensland, while electrical pre-assembly work was carried out at the Bombardier site in Dandenong, Victoria.
The JV will continue to provide maintenance services to PTA for the A and B series train fleets until 2026. These trains are operated by Transperth, the public transport system serving Perth, the capital of Western Australia, as well as adjacent suburban regions.
Around 130 people will be engaged across three sites, including Nowergup to offer the maintenance services to the PTA fleet.
Recently, Bombardier announced the opening of a rail car assembly site in Pittsburg, California.
