The carriages will be configured into ten regional intercity trains, nine short regional trains and ten long regional trains.

The scope of the contract also includes building a maintenance facility in Dubbo to maintain the carriages for 15 years. The final assembly and commissioning of the vehicles will also be carried out at this facility.

“The trains will be powered by engines that produce fewer emissions than the current fleet, reducing the impacts on air quality.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional New South Wales John Barilaro said: “This government is following through on its commitment to replace the old rail fleet with a new modern fleet that passengers can use to travel in comfort with all of the facilities expected of modern rail transport.”

The fleet will replace the older XPT, XPLORER and Endeavour trains, some of which have operated for more than 35 years.
