Škoda Transportation has supplied the first ForCity Classic tram to Chemnitz transportation company (CVAG) in Germany.

The company is set to deliver 14 vehicles to CVAG as part of a tender won in 2016. The total value of the contract is CZK950m ($41.56m).

Škoda Transportation group CEO and board chairman Petr Brzezina said: “This first vehicle initiates several months of challenging type tests directly in Chemnitz.

“The first passengers will be able to use this tram during a trial run in the spring of next year.  The entire fleet will be delivered to Germany by the summer of 2019.”

The ForCity Classic trams are bidirectional and feature stainless steel body. The low-floored vehicles to be delivered to CVAG meet all German requirements to ensure fully barrier-free access.

“The first passengers will be able to use this tram during a trial run in the spring of next year.  The entire fleet will be delivered to Germany by the summer of 2019.”

Equipped with easy to understand information system and audio system for visually impaired passengers, the 31.4m long trams are capable of carrying 281 people.

The ForCity Classic trams also feature air conditioning systems in the driver’s compartment.

Škoda Transportation chief designer Jaroslav Kulhánek said: “The maximum speed of the tram is 80km/h, however, for the operation in Chemnitz, Germany, this speed is limited to 60km/h.

“Excellent driving performance even in bad weather is ensured by 100% adhesion (12 wheels means 12 motors without a gearbox).

“The vehicles also have a new generation of electric drive also produced in Škoda.”

In June, Škoda Transportation won a contract in Germany to supply 80 trams for transport company Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr.

These trams will operate on Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg lines.
