The newly refurbished trains are expected to redefine customer experience on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC) service, providing travellers with first-rate accommodations and amenities.

Acela’s interiors will feature spacious and smooth leather seats with integrated in-seat lighting, personal electrical outlets and USB ports.

“The next generation of Acela trains will set a new standard for rail service in the US, providing our customers with a superior travel experience.”

Each seat, which was designed based on feedback from Amtrak customers, will be equipped with dual tray tables and offer customers with a large and small table option.

Handles at the seatbacks will help customers to move across the train with ease.

The trains will also feature a high-tech onboard information system and six LED screens in each train car providing real-time information about location, train speed and conductor announcements.

Amtrak Northeast Corridor Service Line vice president Caroline Decker said: “The next generation of Acela trains will set a new standard for rail service in the US, providing our customers with a superior travel experience.”

The new trainsets are expected to accommodate 386 passengers, an increase of around 30% compared to their previous version.

A prototype of the new trainsets is expected to be ready by next year, with the first train entering service in the NEC in 2021. All trainsets are expected to be in service by the end of 2022.

Amtrak has carried more than 30 million passengers for the past seven years over its operated lines.

It operates more than 300 trains daily, connecting more than 500 destinations in 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian Provinces and reaches 400 additional destinations through connecting bus routes.
