Slovenian state rail operator Slovenske Železnice has ordered 26 single and double-decker multiple units from rolling stock manufacturer Stadler as part of a contract worth nearly €170m.

The contract includes the construction, design and delivery of 11 four-car FLIRT EMU trains, five three-car FLIRT DMU trains and ten three-car double-decker KISS EMU trains including warranty coverage.

The contract also includes an option for 26 additional units.

Slovenske Železnice general manager Dusan Mes said: “The signing of this contract with Stadler is the first step toward modernising rail passenger transport in Slovenia.

“With new modern trains we are taking a step forward in the renewal of our fleet and as a result in the satisfaction of our customers.”

The Slovenian rail operator will be able to operate different routes with the range of vehicles provided in the agreement.

Stadler Deputy Group CEO and Head of Marketing and Sales Peter Jenelten said: “Stadler is very proud not only to be delivering trains to Slovenia for the first time, but also to be able to construct a complete series of different vehicles that have been coordinated with each other to form a uniform fleet.”

The four-car electric FLIRT trains are designed for regional operations and can run at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

These trains have seating arrangements for 235 passengers with standing room for an additional 227 people.

The ten three-car electric KISS trains can also operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h and can seat 292 people along with additional standing room for 264 people.

Capable of running at a maximum speed of 140 km/h, the three-car diesel-electric FLIRT DMU trains offer seats to 171 passengers and standing room to another 167 people.
