ABB, the power and automation technology major, has won a $15m contract from AGP Metro Polska in Poland to build seven new medium-voltage substations that will supply power to a new metro line in Warsaw.

Under the contract, ABB will build four 15kV / 825V DC / 400V AC combined traction and auxiliary substations and three auxiliary substations of 15 kV / 400V AC to power the Warsaw metro line 2.

As part of the project, ABB will be responsible for design engineering, supply, erection, commissioning and start-up of the substations and civil works.

One of the seven new substations will also be equipped with a 40MJ energy storage system based on double-layer super-capacitors, which will tap braking energy from the metro cars.

ABB will also provide a network management system that will integrate with the existing metro line 1 management system.

The Warsaw metro line 2, connecting the eastern and western parts of the Polish capital, is under construction and due for completion in 2013.
