The upgraded electrical systems on the trains will ensure more reliable power supply while reducing energy consumption.

A total $510m will be invested by SJ as part of a comprehensive programme for the trains. Launched in the late 1980s and built by ASEA, the trains will also feature new interior design.

"The need and demand for environmentally friendly and comfortable travel will keep increasing."

Featuring a basket tilting design, the SJ 2000 train offers passengers a comfortable travelling experience at high speed on the Swedish rail network.

SJ CEO Crister Fritzson said: "The need and demand for environmentally friendly and comfortable travel will keep increasing. Passenger train journeys went up by 59% from 1997 to 2010. All signs point to a further strong increase, not least in terms of business travel as companies live up to their sustainability commitments.

"This initiative will enable SJ to offer the most comfortable train journeys on the main inter-city lines in Sweden for a long time ahead."

Delivery of the first retrofitted train is scheduled to take place in 2015, following successful testing and evaluation. The remaining units will built incrementally through 2019 with disassembly and assembly to be performed in Sweden along with a local partner.
