A consortium of Bombardier Transportation, John Laing, ITOCHU Corporation and Uberior, has won a $4.1bn order to provide 75 new six-car electrical multiple units (EMUs) for the Queensland government.

The consortium will also provide maintenance services for 30 years, and build a maintenance centre under a 32-year public-private partnership.

The depot design and construction will be subcontracted to Laing O’Rourke. Bombardier’s share in the order will be about $2.7bn.

The New Generation Rollingstock Project aims to enhance commuter services in areas of South East Queensland.

"Bombardier’s fleet maintenance will ensure that the new trains provide superior performance for the next 30 years, enabling Queensland Rail to continue to deliver reliable and cost-effective services for passengers enjoying a new standard of travelling environment."

The new commuter trains are being designed and engineered in Australia and will be manufactured at Bombardier’s facility in Savli, India.

To be developed on the Adelaide EMU train and Bombardier VLocity design, the new new commuter trains will feature technologies like Bombardier’s Flexx bogies, Mitrac propulsion system, and Orbiflo advanced condition monitoring system.

The new trains will be designed and engineered in Australia and will be produced at Bombardier’s facility in Savli, India.

The consortium members are equity partners for the project that is being financed jointly by the public and private sector.
