Etihad Rail, UAE’s national railway network, is planning to build four stations to connect the railway network to the Dubai Metro.

Commenting on the plans, Etihad Rail acting CEO Faris Al Mazrouei was quoted by Emirates 24/7 as saying: "We are studying four stations for the rail network in Dubai.

"We are studying a station in Jebel Ali Port, and another one at Al Maktoum International Airport."

Al Mazrouei also told the news agency that a third station is being reviewed in Dubailand, and a fourth in Meydan.

"Etihad Rail is developing a new 1,200km, $11bn rail network in the UAE, which is currently being carried out in three phases."

"We are working very hard with the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) to realise such an option. This is currently one of the ideas that we are discussing," Al Mazrouei said.

The new freight line is under construction and will operate two trains to transport 22,000 metric tonnes of granulated sulphur daily. It could open for service by the end of the year.

The 628km second stage of the project will connect Mussafah Port to Khalifa Port and Jebel Ali Port, and is expected to be completed by January 2017.

Stage three of the line, the exact route of which is currently under review, will span 279km and will connect the rest of the Northern Emirates. Completion of this is scheduled for December 2018.
