Denver Union Station

The US Department of Transportation (DoT) has unveiled Denver Union Station, a new multimodal transportation hub that includes a bus facility and rail connections.

Denver Union Station integrates light rail, Amtrak and new commuter rail lines with seamless connections to local, regional and intercity bus services.

The bus concourse has 22 bus bays to accommodate Denver Regional Transportation District bus routes, as well as free downtown circulator routes and other bus services.

The Denver Union Station redevelopment project and the Eagle commuter rail project form a part of Colorado’s FasTracks programme.

The Eagle project includes the construction of two new rail lines, which will serve Denver Union Station when they open in 2016.

US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said: "We need Congress to pass a long-term transportation bill so we can continue to invest in more good projects, such as the transportation hub, to meet the rising demand for more and better transportation choices."

DoT’s federal transit administration (FTA) and federal highway administration have provided $87.3m in grant funding toward the Denver Union Station redevelopment project worth $479m.

The project has also being benefitted from $300m in loans from DoT’s transportation infrastructure finance and innovation act (TIFIA) programme, as well as the federal railroad administration’s railroad rehabilitation and improvement financing loan programme.

In addition, DoT has provided $1bn in FTA capital investment grant funding and a TIFIA loan of up to $280m for the Eagle commuter rail project.
