A construction worker has been killed after a concrete support fell at the monorail project in São Paulo, Brazil, leaving at least two others injured.

The accident occured after a large concrete support beam fell at the site. The exact reason for the collapse was still not clear, but an investigation has been launched.

The 17.7km-long monorail project was meant to connect Congonhas Airport to the city’s metro network.

The Line 17-Gold project of the São Paulo monorail project was scheduled for completion for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, construction was delayed as it did not receive required environmental approvals.

Line 17 will start at Line 1 Jabaquara terminus station and terminate at Line 4 Morumbi station São Paulo. The monorail line is expected to serve approximately 252,000 passengers daily, with trains travelling at headways of 200 seconds.

In May, Brazil’s Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo had contracted Thales to deliver integrated telecommunications systems for the São Paulo monorail project.

Thales has partnered with local partner T’Trans to provide the solution over the next 22 months.

The order covers the delivery of a master clock, Thales passenger information system, CCTV systems, as well as transmission and telephony subsystems.

Thales has also agreed to install its Seltrac communications-based train control system on the monorail.
