Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced plans to build a new mass rapid transit (MRT) station on the North-South Line.

To be located between Sembawang and Yishun stations along Canberra Link, the proposed station will be the second MRT station to be built on an existing rail line.

The first station is Dover station on the East-West Line which opened in 2001.

Canberra station will have five entrances connecting to the new housing estates across Canberra Link. Upon completion, the station will have linkways to bus stops, bicycle parks, as well as pick-up and drop-off points.

An elevated link bridge will be also built across Canberra Link, which will allow commuters to bypass the station’s concourse level to directly access the city-bound train platform.

With the new MRT station, passengers travelling towards the city centre or Jurong East will save up to ten minutes of journey time.

LTA has recently received the first new metro trains for the Circle Line (CCL) and the North East Line (NEL), which aim to reduce congestion and passenger waiting times.
