UK rail operator South West Trains is set to introduce a new technology on its trains to enhance reliability and punctuality across the network.

The new high-tech solution, GreenSpeed Driver Advisory System, will be able to collect real-time data from a range of sources to calculate the ideal speed of the train, helping to ensure service punctuality.

In addition, this system is capable of minimising the impact on the environment by reducing energy consumption, as well as allowing running more frequent trains on the network.

South West Trains engineering director Christian Roth said: "We are investing millions of pounds right across the network to provide extra space, refurbish and improve our trains, as well as upgrading our infrastructure to ensure more of our trains run on time.

The new development is part of a wider plan, which is aimed to transform services for passengers.

In addition, it includes plans for longer platforms, reopening the former Waterloo International Terminal, as well as major investment in new and refurbished carriages and longer trains.

South West Trains has awarded a contract to introduce the technology to rolling stock engineering consultancy ESG and the IT and engineering company Cubris.

Installation of the solution is expected to start in May, with the system being fully operational in 2016. The work will take place on Class 158/9, 458, 444 and 450 trains.
