Qatar Rail has invited bids from consultants and contractors to develop 12 railway stations for the Doha Metro project.

Starting 25 October, Qatar Rail will start accepting tender forms to carry out these works under the project, reported Al Sharq.

The first phase, covering 37 stations, will be completed by 2018, with the second phase of 60 stations by 2030.

Qatar Rail unveiled the architectural opportunities of the stations to prospective contractors in August.

Work on the Doha Metro project is underway, with about 50% of the 113km long tunnelling completed. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by 2019.

In 2013, Qatar Rail has awarded four contracts, worth a total of $8.2bn to design and build railway lines as part of the first phase construction of the metro project.

The planned work includes Red Line North (RLN), Red Line South (RLS), Green Line (GLN), and several major stations.

These metro lines will link major sites such as Education City, West Bay, Lusail, Hamad Bin Khalifa International Airport, and the Qatar National Convention Centre, as well as stadiums for the 2022 World Cup.

For the RLN project, Qatar Rail has selected a consortium led by Italian construction firm Impregilo, comprising South Korea’s SK Engineering & Construction, and Qatar’s Galfar al-Misnad Engineering and Contracting.

The Green Line project was awarded to a consortium comprising Saudi Binladin Group and Qatar’s Hamad Bin Khalid Contracting, and led by PORR Bau.

In May 2013, a consortium of Spanish construction and civil engineering firm Obrascon Huarte Lain (OHL), Samsung C&T, and Qatar Building Company, won a €1.1bn contract from Qatar Rail to build two stations for the Doha Metro.
