Alstom has begun the production of Metropolis trainsets for the Riyadh Metro, Saudi Arabia, with the first three units scheduled to be delivered in 2017.

The trainsets are being manufactured at Alstom’s Katowice plant in Poland.

The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) awarded a €5.8bn contract to the Fast consortium in 2013, for the design and construction of Line 4 (Yellow), Line 5 (Green) and Line 6 (Purple) of the Riyadh Metro network.

As a partner in the consortium, Alstom will supply 69 Metropolis trainsets, for a share of more than €1.2bn of the total contract value.

The company will also supply its Urbalis communication-based train control (CBTC) signalling system, HESOP energy recovery system, and Appitrack fast track-laying technology.

The FAST consortium includes FCC (leader), Samsung, Alstom, Freyssinet Saudi Arabia, Strukton, Setec and Typsa.

The driverless Metropolis trains for Riyadh will have two cars a set. The 36m-long trains will feature three classes, namely first class, family and single.

According to Alstom, the interiors provide a high level of comfort with ergonomic seating, LED lighting, air-conditioning and an advanced passenger information system.

Riyadh Metro is part of Riyadh Public Transport Project, which also includes a bus system and other transport services in the city.

The 178km-long Riyadh Metro will have six lines and 85 stations.

Lines 1 and 2 are being developed by the BACS consortium that includes Bechtel, Almabani General Contractors, Consolidated Contractors Company and Siemens.

The ArRiyadh New Mobility (ANM) consortium, including Ansaldo STS, Salini-Impregilo, Larsen & Toubro, Nesma and Bombardier, is building Line 3.

The project is expected to enter commercial service in 2018.
