Alstom has secured a €85m contract from Entreprise Métro d’Alger (EMA), a part of the Cital joint venture (JV), to supply 26 Citadis low-floor light rail vehicle (LRV) kits for Setif, Algeria.

A JV between Alstom (49%), Ferrovial (41%) and EMA (10%), Cital will assemble the new trams at its assembly and maintenance plant in Annaba, Algeria.

The order forms part of a framework contract signed in 2012 by Cital and EMA for the supply of Citadis trams to operate on lines planned for several Algerian cities.

"Setif is now the seventh city in Algeria to adopt Citadis, a mode of urban transport that is environmental-friendly, pleasant, comfortable and reliable."

Cital was established in 2010 to assemble and maintain Citadis LRVs for new light rail lines in Algeria to better support the country’s vast programme to develop and improve urban mobility projects.

Opened last May, the joint venture’s 46,000m² Annaba facility is equipped with a 1km electrified test track and capable of assembling five trams a month.

The new trams will be operated on a 15.2km-long line that is scheduled to enter into commercial service in the first quarter of 2018.

In 2014, a consortium of Alstom and Turkish construction company Yapi Merkezi was awarded a contract to build and equip the line from El Bez University to Eastern Maintenance Centre.

The contract also included delivery of the power supply, catenary, ticketing, telecommunications, signalling and a control centre.

Alstom Middle East and Africa senior vice-president Gian-Luca Erbacci said: "Setif is now the seventh city in Algeria to adopt Citadis, a mode of urban transport that is environmental-friendly, pleasant, comfortable and reliable."

The new 44m-long, low-floor Citadis trams will be able to carry 302 passengers, feature 12 doors and be equipped with air-conditioning, CCTV cameras, and areas for stroller and wheelchairs to facilitate people with reduced mobility.
