Alstom, under a 50/50 consortium with Colas Rail, has secured a €12m contract from the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) in Egypt for the extension of Cairo Metro Line 1.
The contract includes the extension of the line from El-Marg to New El-Marg station.

The scope of work includes the construction of 1.2km of double tracks and one station at New El-Marg, which will be connected to the main line and the control centre of Line 1.
The extension is designed to enable NAT to offer a more efficient service in the area of El Marg, which is carrying more passengers every day.
Under the deal, Alstom will be responsible for the design, supply and installation of power supply, signalling and telecommunications equipment.
It is reported that the works, which will last 24 months, will not interrupt the operation of the line.

By GlobalDataIn December, Alstom won a contract from NAT to provide a signalling system to equip the new maintenance depot of Line 1 which is claimed to be the backbone of the Greater Cairo underground metro network and has two million passengers per day.
Thales also signed two new contracts in December to upgrade the fare collection system for Lines 1 and 2 on Egypt’s Cairo Metro, as well as provide communications systems for the Al Thawra extension on Line 3 (Phase 3).
Under the deal, Thales was responsible for deploying its TransCity fare collection solution, which uses its Web 2.0 technologies, on Cairo Metro’s Lines 1 and 2, effectively replacing the equipment installed in the 1980s.
