The new order is part of a frame contract signed with Trenitalia in 2012. Delivery of the trains is scheduled to start at the end of this year and will be operated in the Italian province of Trento (Trentino region).

Coradia Meridian for Trentino, a six car-train electric multiple unit (EMU) type, will be capable of operating at a maximum speed of 160km/h with a capacity of 300 seats.

The vehicles will feature a concentrated traction system with two motor bogies, which optimises the electrical braking capability of the train, allowing energy consumption and brake wear to be reduced.

With a 95% rate of recyclability, the new trains are claimed to be environmentally friendly.

Designing and manufacturing of the Coradia Meridian trains is carried out at Alstom’s Italian centres in Savigliano (Cuneo), Bologna and Sesto San Giovanni (Milan).

The low-floor trains facilitate access to passengers, especially those with reduced mobility and each door is equipped with integrated bridging plates to fill the gap between the train and the platform.

The trains will also be equipped with an onboard video surveillance system and display screens visible from all parts of the train, audio information, Braille signs, sockets for mobile phones and laptops, and space dedicated to luggage.

It is reported that bike storage space will increase from eight to 20 bicycles, which is an important step towards better integration of transport, moving towards achieving sustainable mobility.
