Public Transport Victoria (PTV) has ordered another five six-car X’Trapolis electric multiple-units (EMU) from Alstom, to be used on Melbourne’s suburban rail network.
The EMUs are due to be delivered from Alstom’s Ballarat manufacturing plant in September this year.

The new trainsets will further improve the network’s capacity and bring the total number of cars produced to 552 since 2002.
Alstom Australia and New Zealand’s managing director Mark Coxon said: "We are pleased to be entrusted a new order from PTV, which illustrates its trust in Alstom’s mobility solutions.
"This will not only secure the manufacturing pipeline in Victoria well into 2017, but also provide additional transport capacity to the residents of Melbourne and allow them to commute on a reliable, comfortable and environmental-friendly mode of transport."
In November last year, Alstom delivered the last batch of eight X’Trapolis trainsets to PTV. Construction and testing of these trains was also undertaken at Ballarat.

By GlobalDataIn April, the Government of Victoria opened Preston Tram Depot and Workshop for Melbourne’s E-Class trams. The new facility is the result of an A$190m ($146m) redevelopment of the existing depot on St Georges Road.
It is also part of the A$800m ($617m) tram procurement programme funded by the former Labor Government.
