The MTU brand will provide a total of 232 type 20V 4000 R63L engines with an output of 3,300kw for new freight locomotives for South African operator Transnet Freight Rail.

Designed by Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CRRC, the first two class 45 locomotives are currently being shipped from China to South Africa. After completing the first 20 vehicles in China, the remaining 212 will be assembled in South Africa.

Similarly, the 20 MTU engines will be completely built in Friedrichshafen in Germany and the remaining 212 will be delivered to MTU South Africa for final assembly, painting, and testing.
