Work is currently underway to revamp the Sutton to Wimbledon and Mitcham corridor in Surrey and south London as part of UK Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan.

The £45m railway upgrade project includes modernising signalling equipment in the area, which is currently served by Southern services to London Bridge and London Victoria, as well as Thameslink services to central London, Luton and St Albans.

Network Rail will also equip the railway line with computer-based technology by the end of next year.

Following the upgrade, the railway's signalling will be controlled from Network Rail’s Route Operating Centre at Three Bridges in West Sussex to reduce delays, increase network capacity in the long-term and provide more timely and accurate information to passengers.

The project will cover 37 miles of track and includes upgrading five railway junctions and 70 signals.

In addition, the company will replace more than 100 track circuits, which provide information about the location of trains.

Mitcham Eastfields CCTV level crossing will also be improved as part of the project, Network Rail stated. The improvements to be made are expected to reduce infrastructure faults and the risk of train delays.
