"The demand for six-axle locomotives will grow because of the increasing length and weight of trains."

The transaction will be funded by Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe through a tailor-made, asset-based leasing structure provided by DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing.

HVLE executive Martin Wischner said: “The demand for six-axle locomotives will grow because of the increasing length and weight of trains.

“We need diesel power for the first/last mile but the environmental and economic advantages of electric power are very important for us.”

The locomotives are designed to meet the needs of individual customers, for freight and passenger mainline applications, at speeds of approximately 160km/h, on electrified and non-electrified lines.

The six-axle EURODUAL prototypes are currently undergoing tests in Stradler's Spanish plant.
