SBS Transit and ST Kinetics have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining plans for a collaborative effort to strengthen maintenance and engineering capabilities of rail operations in Singapore.

The agreement will see SBS Transit leverage on ST Kinetic’s expertise in testing and repair, maintenance, engineering and obsolescence management to facilitate its operations.

The MoU also gives ST Kinetics the opportunity to enter the rail maintenance industry and develop its technical capabilities.

SBS Transit CEO Gan Juay Kiat said: “This collaboration will help us deepen our capabilities in rail repairs and maintenance.

“We are always looking at new and innovative ways to further improve rail reliability and provide our commuters with a robust system.”

Both companies have agreed to jointly explore the use of automation and robotics solutions to improve operational productivity.

SBS Transit and ST Kinetics will also work on data analytics to upgrade the resilience of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) infrastructure.

ST Kinetics president Dr Lee Shiang Long said: “This partnership with SBS Transit marks ST Kinetics’ entry into rail MRO and engineering.

“While we are new to the rail segment, we are an experienced and established player, having built up a strong engineering base in design and development of various platforms, through-life management and systems integration for 50 years.”

ST Kinetics has signed an initial agreement following the MoU to refurbish electronics components, which are used in SBS Transit’s trains operating on the North East Line and the light rail vehicles on the Sengkang-Punggol light rail transit systems.
