Bombardier Transportation’s Chinese joint venture (JV) Shentong Bombardier Rail Transit Vehicle Maintenance (SHBRT) has secured two contracts from Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.

The contracts are valued at a combined $158m and have been awarded for the overhaul of 498 metro cars over a ten-year period, which are operating on Metro lines 7 and 9 in Shanghai.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation has received $6.18bn in federal funding for the development of Inland Rail, a proposed direct rail freight route between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Inland Rail will comprise a 1,700km direct rail freight line between the two Australian cities, and is anticipated to reduce travel time to less than 24 hours upon completion.

Transport for New South Wales has selected construction company Bechtel as an official delivery management partner for the tunnels and stations excavation package, which is a part of the wider Sydney Metro project Stage-2.

The scope of the contract includes managing the delivery of 15.5km of twin-bore tunnelling using five tunnel boring machines, in addition to excavation works for six new metro stations.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York has appointed Armstrong World Industries (AWI) to provide ceiling solutions for the East Side Access project currently under development in New York, US.

AWI will deliver the customised, acoustical metal ceiling for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) concourse at Grand Central Terminal by early next year.

East Side Access will be an extension to New York’s existing LIRR commuter rail system.

Romanian national railway company CFR SA has awarded a €600m ($652.6m) contract to a joint venture consisting of Astaldi (49.5%), FCC (49.5%) and Convensa (1%).

The new agreement will see the refurbishment of Romania’s Frontiera-Curtici-Simeria railway line, also known as Lot 3.

Developments currently scheduled under the arrangement include the rehabilitation of an approximately 40km length of track between Gurasada and Simeria, construction of 17 bridges and installation of the ERTMS signalling and telecommunications system.

Eight stations are also due for renovation as part of the commitment, in addition to various other minor works.
