Previous agreements have already seen UWC deliver more than 10,000 freights cars to STLC, the largest being the shipment of 15,000 freight cars for a sum of nearly RUR50bn ($870m).

The new railcars will be leased to Vostok 1520 transport firm, a part of First Heavy Haul Company, for a period of 180 months.

STLC first deputy CEO Anton Borisevich said: “We are facing significant demand for up-to-date railway equipment from real sector companies.

“Demand for modern freight cars is particularly strong. The deal with UWC will strengthen the leading positions of our company on the railway leasing market and provide our customers with new rolling stock.”

"The deal with UWC will strengthen the leading positions of our company on the railway leasing market and provide our customers with new rolling stock."

UWC’s main production facility Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant (TVSZ) will deliver two types of gondolas to STLC, featuring unloading hatches and solid-bottoms.

The new freight cars are to be equipped with the 1-VM loading gauge and will have a load capacity of 75t-77t, which is higher than Russia's current 70t freight cars.

The internal dimensions of the railcars are also expected to increase 10m3 from the existing 86m3 in standard variants to 98m3.

UWC noted that a freight train made up 71 TVSZ gondola units is capable of carrying around 500t of cargo.
