Penn Governor

State governor Tom Wolf has revealed plans to improve the Harrisburg Transportation Center and surrounding areas in Pennsylvania, US.

As part of the plan, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) would make an initial investment of $15m over the next two years to carry out major improvements and developments to the ageing Harrisburg train station.

The investment will be used to equip energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, replace multiple roofs, install new windows and renovate under utilised space.

"We want to partner with Amtrak, the city of Harrisburg, and its redevelopment authority to invest in this centre and help create a magnet for redevelopment in the surrounding area."

In the future, the project would require another $50m to $60m for station and other transportation and land use improvements.

Wolf said: "Enhancing Pennsylvania’s transportation infrastructure is essential to the region’s economy and the Harrisburg Transportation Center is a vital hub that serves our Keystone Corridor passenger rail service, as well as intercity bus and local transit.

"The centre serves more than 1.6 million riders per year, including many people working for the commonwealth. State government calls Harrisburg home and we want to partner with the city where possible to improve the quality of life for its residents and businesses."

According to PennDOT, these works are intended to attract private sector investment to improve the areas around the station.

PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards said: "We want to partner with Amtrak, the city of Harrisburg, and its redevelopment authority to invest in this centre and help create a magnet for redevelopment in the surrounding area. This is a huge step on the road to that goal."

The Harrisburg Transportation Center is the western terminal point for all but two of the 28 Amtrak trains that serve the station each day.

Work under this project will be carried out by Michael Baker and subcontractor BASE Architecture Planning and Engineering by conducting research and outreach as a first step to a transit-oriented development plan.
