The UK's Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has opened the new Second City Crossing tram line, which goes right through the city centre.

Developed as part of a £1.5bn transport expansion plan, which began in 2009, the newly opened line connects the St Peter’s Square with Victoria Station.

The new £165m tram line is the final phase of the transport expansion plan and took three years to complete, reported BBC.

Featuring a 1.3km stretch of track, the Second City Crossing has enabled operator Metrolink to include 93 stops and more than 60 miles of track.

"My thanks goes to all those who’ve worked so hard to ultimately deliver a world-class transport system to the people of Greater Manchester."

Transport for Greater Manchester committee chair Andrew Fender said: “Having chaired a strategy group from 1982, which developed the Metrolink concept, I am extremely proud, 35 years later, to see the completion of the Second City Crossing, and with it our phenomenal and multi-award winning ‘Phase three’ expansion programme.

“It’s been a remarkable journey, one I’m privileged to have seen firsthand, and my thanks goes to all those who’ve worked so hard to turn those early dreams and ambitions into a reality and who have, ultimately, delivered a world-class transport system to the people of Greater Manchester.”
