Schaefer has introduced a new line of converters designed for use during the ‘dead start’ cranking for rail applications. This unit can supply power to the auxiliary control circuitry from any number of different sources including the 3rd rail centenary line.

Depending on the source, there are nine standard DC input voltage ranging from 10VDC- 850VDC, as well as AC input voltage ranges of 185VAC-264VAC and 93VAC-138VAC / 185VAC-264VAC (switchable). Three phase AC input voltages of 3 x 400VAC (320-460) and 3 x 480VAC (400-530) and can be supplied with an external PFC module. Output power ranges from 500W to 5,000kW. All outputs are adjustable and fully regulated to 0.2% or better (load) and 0.1% (line).

All units have remote sensing, overvoltage protection, and current limit protection on the output. Efficiencies run up to 90%. Operating temperatures available include -20°C to +75°C and -40°C to +75°C.

The units are packaged in a sealed stainless steel enclosure. Options available include decoupling diodes for parallel operation, ‘ruggedisation,’ inhibit and power fail/DC-ok. Applications include locomotive controls and communications equipment, telecommunication systems, process control systems, and power stations.
