In the Rail sector, Baker Bellfield provides specialist interior product solutions such as table systems, luggage towers, luggage racks, grab poles, flooring, vestibule panels, draught screens, and ceiling panels. These products are all made from high-quality materials that meet industry standards and are guaranteed to last. The company received its first contract for rolling stock interiors from Bombardier Transportation UK in 2005. After that, Baker Bellfield dedicated itself to providing premium products to the rolling stock market.

Advanced manufacturing

The company’s manufacturing processes extend over three sites in the UK and US, amounting to approximately 120,000ft2. This includes a number of facilities dedicated to special manufacturing processes, such as design engineering, bonding, metalwork, specialised joinery, and injection moulding. The company’s continued strategic investment in advanced manufacturing technologies ensures control of products through the designing, manufacturing, and installation phases.

Baker Bellfield uses photorealistic renders to help customers visualise what the final products will look like. The company also uses 3D modelling to help customers develop their ideas and provide customised solutions. In addition, the company can also create product prototypes to allow customers to see a physical representation of a final product before the main batch is produced.

Baker Bellfield strives to achieve continuous improvement in all areas of the research, design, and development process.

Quality management systems

In 2010, the company became the first business in the UK to be accredited with the International Rail Industry Standard (IRIS) for interiors. The company is now certified to ISO 9001:2015 standard and International Rail Industry Standard ISO/TS 22163 (IRIS Rev3.1), EN 15085-2 CWRVC Welding of Railway Vehicles and Components, ISO 3834 Quality Requirements in Welding, and DIN 6701-2 Adhesive Bonding of Railway Vehicles and Parts Class A2. Baker Bellfield is proud to be one of the only UK companies to hold all of these rail-specific standards.

Quality is important to Baker Bellfield and the processes used by the company are externally audited regularly to ensure that the quality remains high. Statutory safety requirements are followed at all times to protect both the employees and end users of the products.

The company is committed to providing high standards of technical and safety strategies. This involves working with customers to integrate a safety by design policy and providing a safe and healthy working environment for employees.

Sustainable products

Baker Bellfield has been instrumental in developing new products for the rail sector, including the innovative lightweight EN45545-2 HL3 compliant panels, which are manufactured using a PET structural foam core processed from 100% recycled PET bottles. This makes them some of the most sustainable products being installed on rolling stock in the UK, Europe, and now in the USA. PET foam is beneficial as it has a high mechanical strength while also remaining lightweight, making it durable and practical for a variety of rolling stock interior applications.

The company has specified these innovative products on a number of leading rolling stock projects, including the Siemens Mobility project for Cab Partition Panels for the new trains being built for the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line upgrade. Its products were also used on Alstom-Bombardier’s Class 390 refurbishment project for Avanti/Angel Trains.

Sustainable company

Baker Bellfield is fully committed to the all-encompassing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) approach.

The company has a silver award from Ecovadis and has passed the government’s WPC assessments.

This approach is delivering upon the company’s five year sustainability plan and aligns with the UN’s Target Zero 2050 plan.

Table systems

Baker Bellfield is known for its expertise in designing, engineering, and manufacturing crash-compliant table systems. In the UK, its designs meet GMRT 2100 Issue six, and the company’s knowledge and understanding of this standard mean that it has validated and tested over 200 table systems, making it one of the most recognised Table system suppliers in UK and Europe.

Following on from the successes with validating and testing Table systems to GMRT 2100 Issue six, the company entered the US railroad market. In 2018, Baker Bellfield was approached by Siemens Mobility (USA) to design, engineer, and validate a Table system to APTA PR-C-S-018-13 Rev02, which is the USA’s equivalent rail safety standard.

No other company globally has been able to design, engineer, and validate a Table system to APTA, yet Baker Bellfield achieved this with five different Table types within a two-year period.
