Nippon Koei Co (Nippon Koei) and its Malaysian subsidiary ASAP Mobility Sdn Bhd (ASAP Mobility) will demonstrate a mobility proof of concept (POC) project aimed at delivering cutting-edge digital experiences for public transit in Kuala Lumpur, with Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti) as their Technology Partner for the ADX Promotion Program, for which the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) will undertake the role of secretariat.

The ADX Promotion Program aims to forge partnerships between Japanese companies and their counterparts in Asian markets by leveraging digital technology and promoting the creation of new industries that address societal needs.

The POC to be demonstrated involves three components:

  1. The development of a multimodal journey planning platform that integrates services operated by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, Malaysia’s largest public transport operator, with Asia Mobiliti’s Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) service
  2. The development of an account-based ticketing (ABT) system to support fare payments for the multimodal service
  3. The development of an operational dashboard for data-driven public transport operation optimisation.

Multimodal transit combines the use of multiple modes of public transportation, such as DRT, MRT, LRT, and buses, within a single journey to provide commuters with the best options to get from their origin to their destination.

Such journeys integrated with DRT addresses the first-mile/last-mile connectivity challenge for public transport. The use of artificial intelligence in DRT systems intelligently assigns vehicles to passengers within a geo-fenced zone by factoring waiting time, travel time, and traffic conditions provide for robust and reliable end-to-end public transit journeys within a city.

The goal of the POC is to demonstrate that multimodal journey planning, DRT services and multimodal ABT, working in concert, is a viable holistic solution that can increase public transit ridership through the deep integration of the first-mile/last-mile with the ‘middle-mile’ services of conventional public transportation.

The results of the POC will be used as a reference site for a city-wide roll out of mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) that could be implemented in the near future. MaaS refers to an integrated approach to urban transportation, where data from different transportation services are integrated onto a single platform. Both application providers and the end users can have access to this data via a digital interface for journey planning, booking, and ticketing purposes.

As a Mobility as a Strategy initiative, Nippon Koei, supported by its subsidiary ASAP Mobility, offers comprehensive solutions that address the complex challenges of mobility and urban development sectors by leveraging its expertise and advanced technological solution to optimise urban planning and transportation management. We are dedicated to driving positive change, improving urban environments, and shaping the future of mobility and urban development.

Nippon Koei and ASAP Mobility are currently engaged in several sustainable urban mobility projects in Southeast Asia.

First, in an effort to support the successful implementation of the Jabodetabek Transportation Payment Integration Electronification (EIPTJ) project, especially to increase the effectiveness of the implementation of MaaS by PT JakLingko Indonesia Cooperates (JakLingko), Nippon Koei carries out business development and operational support. Nippon Koei and JakLingko agree to collaborate in processing the data accumulated over the EIPTJ project in order to produce an analysis of business potentials that can be developed in the future.

The scope of collaboration includes processing the data from the JakLingko MaaS App, creating a business model for a MaaS project, analysing business potentials that may occur, conducting discussions and determining the business model through data insight using data obtained from the JakLingko MaaS App, and conducting a proof of concept together for the subsequent commercialisation of non-ticket business activities.

Second, Nippon Koei is selected as one of the eight winning innovations to drive urban sustainability in the Jurong Lake District in Singapore under the Jurong Lake District Innovation Challenge in Open Innovation Platform (OIP). OIP, operated by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) in Singapore, is a platform to facilitate collaboration between private and public entities as problem owners and advanced technology companies as solution providers.

As a a personalised journey planner application for driving a sustainable and car-lite JLD, the winning solution by Nippon Koei seeks to promote the use of public transport and active mobility by sharing benefits such as time savings, positive health outcomes, and positive impacts on the environment.

Nippon Koei will develop a prototype and a proof of concept of a personalised mobility app that aims to create seamless walk, cycle, and ride experiences. The app will integrate nudge API to shift user behaviour towards sustainable transportation choices and, in addition, insights from the data analytics dashboard will help the nudge interventions. The Land transport authority (LTA), as a problem owner of this project, expects that the solution will have the potential to become a useful tool for commuters to make the most optimal use of the various transport options available thorough features such as real-time cost and environmental impact comparisons between different modes.

Lastly, for leading these initiatives, Nippon Koei launches an innovative data analytics and insight solution named ‘GauDT’, which empowers urban and transportation planners, policymakers, real estate developers, and urban service providers to make informed decisions. Its web-based analytical and insight generator platform harnesses the power of cutting-edge technology, data science, and advanced algorithms to unlock the potential of big-data.

GauDT’s features include:

  • Providing integrated and actionable insights using a holistic view of mobility data for stakeholders so that GauDT gains comprehensive and actionable insights
  • Providing mobility analytic solutions for southeast Asia by understanding the unique challenges of the region, allowing GauDT to provide tailored mobility insights specific to the region
  • GauDT offers a customisable platform that caters to the unique needs of our clients
  • Collective real-world experience and a background in design and engineering, meaning that GauDT is the collective experience and expertise of our organisation
  • GauDT is scalable and future ready, and designed to scale with evolving technology and mobility trends.
