C.A.T.E.R Portable Testing System Gets Approval from Network Rail

HANDWAVE SRT

Network Rail has awarded full approval for the implementation of C.A.T.E.R’s HANDWave ultrasonic rail flaw detection (RFD) system for rail inspection in the UK.

The RFD system is considered to add value to Network Rail’s drive to deliver efficiencies in the critical area of rail integrity and operational expenditure. Extensive trials have shown significant technical and commercial benefits and follow multiple sales of HANDWave to Transport for London in 2013.

The ULTRAWave LITE RFD software, used on the HANDWave carrier, offers a better understanding of the rail condition, improved reporting of defects, greater distances inspected per shift and reduced expenditure on operational line items such as training and maintenance.

The versatile configuration of HANDWave offers single rail, dual rail and towed dual rail units, which share common mechanicals, digital processing power and detection performance, whether in pedestrian or more automated mode such as the towed HANDWave Dual Rail Tester (DRT).

The report information and analysis generated by HANDWave from increased rail access, particularly in infrequently tested areas such as hard to reach or heavy traffic areas, provide Network Rail with enhanced information for informed decision making.

Network Rail is looking towards a predictive maintenance model for improved rail safety and targeted maintenance planning. The report formats and post processing capabilities will assist in this planning for long-term economic savings and improved rail traffic continuity.

The Australian based company has a European affiliate, C.A.T.E.R-EU, which provides technical support, accreditations for equipment and training, as well as an experienced workforce for contract testing.
