At the InnoTrans 2008 exhibition in Berlin, Knorr-Bremse Rail Vehicle Systems presented its EP1001 wheel flat protection system for freight cars. EP1001 is a robust,
low-cost and low-maintenance system, designed to cope with the harsh operating environment in the rail freight sector. In contrast to the anti-lock braking systems in passenger trains, which require an external power supply, the new EP1001 system is self-powered.

By preventing wheel flats from developing, EP1001 helps to avoid damage to both the wheels and track. It thereby significantly cuts the cost and effort associated with rolling stock maintenance for transport operators. In addition, the system also reduces the wear-and-tear-related fees, which are payable in certain countries, such as the UK, for use of the rail infrastructure.

For network operators, EP1001 offers a significant reduction in track damage caused by wheel flats. Particularly in cold regions, where the rails can become brittle, this considerably reduces maintenance requirements. Moreover, the system also helps to avoid the noise caused by flats.
